REVIEW: Federer loses first US Open quarterfinal
TENNIS – Tomas Berdych stunned Roger Federer on Wednesday night, sending the Swiss to his first quarterfinal loss at the US Open. Read on for all the numbers surrounding this upset.
> Federer had been 8-0 in his career in US Open quarterfinals. The last time he failed to reach the semifinals was in 2003.
> The Australian Open is now the only Grand Slam in which Federer has never lost in the quarterfinals (8-0).
> Four of Federer’s six career Grand Slam quarterfinal losses have come since the 2010 French Open. The other two came in 2001.
> Federer lost under lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium at the US Open for the first time. He had been 21-0 prior to this loss.
> Berdych joins Rafael Nadal (8 wins) and Novak Djokovic (5) as the only players to defeat Federer more than once in Grand Slam play since Federer won his first major title at Wimbledon in 2003. Berdych also defeated Federer in the 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinals.
> This is the first Grand Slam tournament in which the semifinals featured neither Federer nor Nadal since the 2004 French Open.
