REVIEW: CL final will be ‘Tale of One City’

FOOTBALL – It has taken Atlético Madrid 40 years to return to the CC/CL final and will now join Real Madrid in the first final of a European cup competition that will feature teams from the same city. It will also be the 17th time that two teams from the same country meet in a European final. And it will be the fifth time this occurs in the CC/CL. There has been one previous all-Spanish final in the CL. Real Madrid beat Valencia CF 3-0 in 1999/00.

REVIEW: Barça win after being two goals down

FOOTBALL – For the second time this season, FC Barcelona managed to turn a two-goal deficit into a victory by triumphing 3-2 at Villarreal CF after going 2-0 down. Barcelona also repaired this deficit at Getafe on 22 December and Real Sociedad is the only other team in the division to have achieved this in 2013/14. For the first time since 18 February 2006 (FC Barcelona-Real Betis 5-1), Barça benefited from two own goals by the opposition.

RECORD: Fener equal Gala record with 19th Süper Lig crown

FOOTBALL – Fenerbahçe secured their 19th Süper Lig title on Sunday, equalling the Turkish record for most domestic league titles. This mark had been held outright by Fener’s crosstown rivals Galatasaray. Another Istanbul club, Besiktas, has won 11 league titles and no other side has won more than six since the Süper Lig was launched in 1959.

REVIEW: Gerrans is first Australian winner of LBL classic

CYCLING – The 100th instalment of cycling’s classic race Liège-Bastogne-Liège has been won by Simon Gerrans, who became the first Australian rider to achieve this feat. Australia is the first country to join the winners’ circle in ‘La Doyenne’ since 2003, when Tyler Hamilton delivered the first victory for the United States.

REVIEW: Ajax equal record with fourth straight league title

FOOTBALL – Ajax have equalled a Dutch record by winning their fourth successive league championship. This had previously been achieved by HVV (1900-1903) and PSV (1986-1989 and 2005-2008). Frank de Boer has now won the Dutch league in each of his first four seasons as a head coach, something that had never previously been accomplished.

RECORD: Ronaldo scores 30+ in four consecutive seasons

FOOTBALL – Cristiano Ronaldo became the first Real Player to score 30+ goals in four Liga seasons in a row after netting twice vs Osasuna (4-0).

> Ronaldo has scored 40 goals in 2010/11, 36 (2011/12), 34 (2012/13) and now 30 in 2013/14.
> The only other player to hve scored 30+ goals in four seasons in a row is Lionel Messi, who could make it five in this season. He currently has 26 goals.
