BREAKING: Cristiano Ronaldo collects third career Ballon d’Or

FOOTBALL –  Cristiano Ronaldo picked up the FIFA Ballon d’Or for 2014, the year for which he was voted the best football player in the world.  Ronaldo had also won the award in 2008 and last year.
He is the fifth player to have won it on at least three occasions and joins Johan Cruijff, Michel Platini and Marco van Basten on three. Only Lionel Messi has won it more often (four times).

BREAKING: United appoint Van Gaal

FOOTBALL – Manchester United have appointed Louis van Gaal as their new manager. Van Gaal becomes the first overseas coach to take charge of the Old Trafford side. Van Gaal, who has won 19 trophies at club level and has won at least one domestic league title with each of the four club sides he has coached: Ajax, FC Barcelona, AZ and Bayern München.

REVIEW: Neymar’s second hat-trick raises career goal total for Seleçao to 30

FOOTBALL – Neymar’s second hat-trick for the Brazilian national team lifted the Seleçao to a comfortable 5-0 win in their friendly against South Africa, their last match before their final World Cup squad will be named in early May. Neymar, who also scored three in an 8-0 triumph over China on 10 September 2012, has joined 11 other players who have netted 30+ times for Brazil in their international careers.

BREAKING: Giggs 10th player over 40 to play in CL

FOOTBALL – Ryan Giggs becomes the 10th player aged 40 or older to play in the Champions League. He also becomes the fifth outfield player at that, behind Alessandro Costacurta (40-211), David Weir (40-211), Tasos Mitropoulos (40-109) and Donato (40-051). Giggs is  40 years and 11 days old today.

BREAKING: Tokyo voted host city of 2020 Olympic Games

OLYMPIC GAMES – Tokyo outlasted Istanbul and Madrid in the IOC vote that determined the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games. Tokyo has now won the bid three times. They won the right to host the Games in 1940, but they were scratched because of World War II. In 1964, Tokyo hosted the Games for the first time. Tokyo joins London as the only cities in the world to have won the bid to host the Olympic Summer Games at least three times.
