RECORD: Spain to serve up five-star CL campaign

FOOTBALL – Valencia CF reached the main stage of the Champions League and made Spain the first country ever to be represented by five teams in one CL season. In Thursday’s draw pots Valencia will be joined by fellow Spanish sides FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Sevilla FC.

REVIEW: Uruguay last country to qualify for 2014 World Cup

FOOTBALL – Uruguay qualified for the 2014 World Cup to complete the field of 32, by seeing off Jordan in their intercontinental playoff tie. Just like in qualifying for the 2002 and 2010 World Cup, Uruguay were the last of all 32 teams to punch their ticket.

> This means that all eight former world champions have qualified for the 2014 World Cup. Twenty-four of 32 teams will return from 2010.
> The 2014 World Cup will have only one nation making its debut: Bosnia-Herzegovina. The 2010 World Cup also had just one – Slovakia.

> The CONMEBOL will be represented by six countries in the 2014 World Cup. It is the first time it is represented by more than five since the inaugural 1930 World Cup (seven).

> Eight sides present in 2014 and not in 2010: Belgium, Russia, Colombia, Iran, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

> Eight sides present in 2010 and not in 2014: Serbia, Paraguay, Denmark, South Africa, New Zealand, Korea DPR, Slovenia, Slovakia.

The United States will qualify with the following result:

 – With a win AND no win by Panama

CONMEBOL: Argentina and Colombia can qualify.

Argentina will qualify with the following results:

 – With a win

– With a draw AND no win by Uruguay

– With a loss AND a loss by Uruguay

Colombia will qualify with the following results:

PREVIEW: United States aim for ticket to 2014 World Cup

FOOTBALL – The next round of World Cup qualifiers will take place on Friday, 6 September. Four zones (CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL and UEFA) will see teams in action, but only United States from the CONCACAF region have a theoretical chance of punching their ticket on Friday. They will do that if they beat Costa Rica and the match between Mexico and Honduras is drawn.
