ANALYSE THIS: Is Mitchell Donald an undiscovered gem?

FOOTBALL – Only six Eredivisie players have provided nine or more assists in each of the last two seasons. Five of them play for the richest teams but the other has just avoided relegation. Is Roda JC Kerkrade midfielder Mitchell Donald the Eredivisie’s undiscovered gem?

Following on from the previous “Analyse This” article identifying potential young stars of the Eredivisie, we decided to expand this look into our data out in the search for other prospects. Sticking to the original formula of nine or more assists but now over the last two seasons and not restricting age produces a very interesting result.

The six players who have provided at least nine assists in each of the last two Eredivisie seasons are Christian Eriksen (Ajax, 17 in 2011/2012, 13 in 2012/2013), Dries Mertens (PSV, 17, 14), Dusan Tadic (FC Groningen and FC Twente, 9, 15), Jeremain Lens (PSV, 11, 10), Kevin Strootman (PSV, 9, 11) and Mitchell Donald (Roda JC Kerkrade, 10, 9).

Roda midfielder Mitchell Donald is now 24-years-old but has only played regular Eredivisie football for the last two seasons, having previously played in just 22 matches – starting just 14 – in the competition prior to 2011/2012. Earlier in his career, at Ajax, Donald suffered a cruciate ligament which put him out for the whole of the 2008/2009 season just as it looked like he would break through into the Ajax first team. Since returning to fitness in 2009, he has had no further injury problems and now has two more or less full seasons behind him for the first time.

So, is it possible that we have found an undervalued talent here by using only data on assists? The other five players who fulfil our criteria are already at big clubs in the Netherlands. Donald has been discarded by a big club but relatively late on after threatening to break through. To complete the picture of his two seasons at Roda, Donald has also scored six Eredivisie goals to add to the two he scored earlier in his career for Ajax and Willem II. Surely he is worth a look for someone?

ANALYSE THIS: Which Eredivisie players should clubs be looking at?

FOOTBALL – Three play-off matches completed the Dutch football season on Sunday so football here will take a break until mid-July when the Europa League qualification starts. Inspired by analytical blogger Ted Knutson, our head of analysis @simongleave decided to use the same methodology to take a look at which Eredivisie attacking players might be worth a look for clubs searching for transfer targets this summer.

Ted’s blog (read here) has identified assists as a potentially important statistic to spot players, defining 9 or more assists in a season by the age of 22 as something to look out for. Here at Infostrada Sports, we have assists for the Eredivisie going back many decades using a definition set down by John Fredrikstadt, the father of Dutch football statistics. Who is the record holder in a single season? A 21-year-old called Ruud Gullit who provided 22 assists in his second season at Feyenoord in 1983/1984.

To keep this analysis simple, let’s only go back to the beginning of this century to find which players have had 9+ assist seasons by the age of 22. Firstly, the players who have since left the Eredivisie:

Seventeen players make up that list with Wesley Sneijder, Salomon Kalou and Luis Suarez all appearing on more than one occasion. The players have generally gone on to bigger things which would tend to confirm that assists are an underused measure. The appearance of Arouna Koné nine years ago is of particular note given that he is one of a handful of Wigan players who are expected to be picked up by a Premier League club in time for next term.

So, what about the players with nine or more assists in a season who are still in the Eredivisie and perhaps worth a look?

Miralem Sulejmani
Sulejmani was signed by Ajax for an Eredivisie record 16.25 million euros at the end of the 2007/2008 season but he has not fulfilled his initial promise there, partially due to injury, and is now available transfer free. He will sign for another club this summer with Benfica being linked for some months now.

Christian Eriksen
The undoubted star of the current Ajax team, confirmed by the fact that he is the only player in the last 13 seasons to have assisted at least nine goals in three different Eredivisie seasons. Is expected to leave this summer with Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all rumoured to be interested.

Leroy George
Has been at NEC for three seasons after moving from FC Utrecht and is now available on a free transfer. George has provided assists on just five goals for NEC in the last two seasons. He has also scored eight times in his 59 Eredivisie matches over that period.

Roy Beerens
The right winger signed for AZ two seasons ago but has not managed to come close to his season of nine goals and 10 assists in 2008/2009. He has eight goals and nine assists in the two seasons since signing for AZ.

Luciano Narsingh
Winger Narsingh’s 20 Eredivisie assists in 2011/2012 was the highest total by a young player since Gullit 28 years earlier. He moved to PSV for 4.1 million euros at the end of that season. He scored six goals and assisted a further five before suffering knee damage just before Christmas 2012.

Maarten Martens
The 28-year-old Belgian midfielder has remained with AZ and also recorded another nine assist season in 2008/2009. However, he has had injury problems, playing only seven matches in 2007/2008 and six this season.

Dusan Tadic
Midfielder Tadic has pretty much repeated his 2010/2011 achievements in the subsequent two seasons, totalling 41 assists and 26 goals. Last summer he moved to FC Twente for 7.7 million euros.

Marko Vejinovic
Midfielder Vejinovic is available transfer free this summer after four seasons with Heracles Almelo. This season, he provided six assists to add to the nine he recorded last term.

Kevin Strootman
The 23-year-old midfielder again recorded a profitable assist season with 11 to add to the nine in his first year with PSV. Strootman was signed by PSV along with his FC Utrecht teammate Dries Mertens for a combined total of 14 million euros in the summer of 2011.

Renato Ibarra
Whilst the focus on Vitesse’s success this season has been on Wilfried Bony and Marco van Ginkel, it is Ecuadorian winger Renato Ibarra who stands out on the assists metric. He provided the final ball for nine of Vitesse’s goals and is certainly one to keep an eye on.

So, 10 players to keep a further eye on, particularly the six who have met the assist requirements we have set over the last two seasons.

REVIEW: Bayern München win fifth CC/Champions League

FOOTBALL – The following is a recap of the 2012/2013 Champions League final.

General
> Bayern München have won their fifth CL/CC in club history.
> Bayern München have won their third piece of silverware of the season, having already secured the German Super Cup and the domestic league Bundesliga title. No German club has ever collected a single season treble consisting of domestic league, domestic cup and a European trophy.  Bayern can become the first if they win the German Cup Final against VfB Stuttgart on June 1.
> Bayern are the only club to have amassed any combination of three trophies in a single season. They won the domestic league, domestic cup and league cup in 1999/2000, 2004/2005 and 2007/2008 and they won the domestic league, league cup and Champions League in 2000/2001.
> Jupp Heynckes is the fourth coach to win the Champions Cup/Champions League with different teams, having led Real Madrid to the trophy in 1997/1998 and Bayern München in 2012/2013. Heynckes is the first coach to manage the feat with a foreign side first, then with a domestic side. Ernst Happel achieved it with two foreign sides (Feyenoord and Hamburger SV), Ottmar Hitzfeld did it with two domestic sides (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München) and José Mourinho first did it with a domestic side (FC Porto), then with a foreign side (Internazionale).

Borussia Dortmund – Bayern München 1-2
> Dortmund are now winless in their last five official matches against Bayern. Their last victory against the Bavarians came in the German Cup final on 12 May 2012. Dortmund won 5-2.
> No player from either of these two squads had ever won the Champions Cup/Champions League before. In fact, only one player on both squads combined had ever won European trophies of any kind. Bayern’s Anatoli Timoshchuk picked up silverware when still at Zenit St. Petersburg, winning the 2007/2008 UEFA Cup and then the 2008 European Super Cup
> Of 58 previous CC/CL final matches, 21 were goalless at the half.
> Mario Mandzukic became the second Croatian to score in a European final of any kind. Zvonimir Boban netted for AC Milan in the European Super Cup Final in 1995.
> Ilkay Gündogan’s equalizer from the spot is only his first ever CL goal and his fourth official goal this season. It was Gündogan’s first penalty in regulation. He had also stepped up in shootouts in the DFB Super Cup (23 July 2011) and the DFB Pokal (20 Dec 2011). he has converted all three.
> Basile Boli, Predrag Mijatovic, Steve McManaman, Carlos Alberto, Sol Campbell, Belletti, Dirk Kuyt and Ilkay Gündogan all scored their first CL goal in a final.
> Arjen Robben joined Patrick Kluivert (1995) and Dirk Kuyt (2007) as Dutch goalscorers in a CL final match.
> Six players had played in Bayern’s 2010 and 2012 finals, which they eventually lost. Five of them, Lahm, Müller, Robben,

ANALYSE THIS: Scoring CL final opener less decisive

FOOTBALL – The team conceding the opening goal of a match across Europe’s top competitions will lose the match just 13.5% of the time. In the final of Europe’s premier club competition, the Champions League, however, the decisiveness of that opening goal is less pronounced.

The sample size of European Cup/Champions League finals is, of course, limited. There have been 54 of these finals in which at least one goal has been scored (including the replay of 1974) with 12 of these (22%) being won by the team conceding the first goal without the need of a penalty shootout.

Compare this to the matches in the top flight of Spain, England, Germany and Italy this season. In those four countries, just 13.5% of the clubs conceding the opening goal went on to win the match.

The difference between these big leagues and the Champions League final is, of course, that the latter tends to involve two teams of similar quality to one another whereas many matches in Europe’s top four leagues will be between two clubs with a greater difference in quality between them. Given that this year’s two CL finalists are both currently ranked in the top five of the Euro Club Index, the final will again be between two clubs of similar quality.

So, if you are supporting the team that concedes the first goal in Saturday evening’s Champions League final, don’t despair. There is still more than a one in five chance that your club will still win, even before a penalty shootout. Here is a list of the 12 finals in which exactly this has happened:
