FOOTBALL – Manchester United have appointed Louis van Gaal as their new manager. Van Gaal becomes the first overseas coach to take charge of the Old Trafford side. Van Gaal, who has won 19 trophies at club level and has won at least one domestic league title with each of the four club sides he has coached: Ajax, FC Barcelona, AZ and Bayern München.

BREAKING: Giggs 10th player over 40 to play in CL
FOOTBALL – Ryan Giggs becomes the 10th player aged 40 or older to play in the Champions League. He also becomes the fifth outfield player at that, behind Alessandro Costacurta (40-211), David Weir (40-211), Tasos Mitropoulos (40-109) and Donato (40-051). Giggs is 40 years and 11 days old today.
BREAKING: Tokyo voted host city of 2020 Olympic Games
OLYMPIC GAMES – Tokyo outlasted Istanbul and Madrid in the IOC vote that determined the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games. Tokyo has now won the bid three times. They won the right to host the Games in 1940, but they were scratched because of World War II. In 1964, Tokyo hosted the Games for the first time. Tokyo joins London as the only cities in the world to have won the bid to host the Olympic Summer Games at least three times.
BREAKING: Longest Bundesliga coaching stint ends
FOOTBALL – Thomas Schaaf will step down at Werder Bremen following the 2012/2013 season, his 15th in succession at the club. When he embarked on the current campaign Schaaf broke the Bundesliga record of 14 consecutive seasons in charge of the same club. That record was held by Otto Rehhagel (1981-1995), remarkably enough also at Werder Bremen.
BREAKING: Bayern clinch fastest Bundesliga title ever
FOOTBALL – Bayern München have clinched their 23rd German league title and 22nd in the Bundesliga era and have thereby broken the record for earliest decision on the calendar beating Köln’s 1963/1964 clincher on 18 April and the record for most matchdays remaining (six). BREAKING: Wrestling to lose Olympic status
The country arguably hit hardest by the omission of wrestling is Turkey, which has won 28 of its 39 Olympic gold medals in wrestling events. Torrid detail: Istanbul is one of the last three remaining cities bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games, the first one that will not feature wrestling.

FOOTBALL – Harry Redknapp will replace Mark Hughes as Queens Park Rangers and thus become the first to have been in charge of five different clubs in the Premier League era. Redknapp emerges from a group of managers, including Mark Hughes, who have managed four different clubs.

BREAKING – Di Matteo first PL manager to be released
FOOTBALL – Roberto Di Matteo has become the first manager to be released by a Premier League club this season. The Italian led Chelsea to the Champions League and FA Cup last season. Di Matteo was sacked a day after losing 3-0 to Juventus, leaving Chelsea on the brink of elimination in the Champions League.

BREAKING: Nadal 2012 season officially done
TENNIS – With Rafael Nadal’s announcement to return to the tennis court in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in December, his 2012 season has officially come to an end. The Spaniard will forego the ATP World Tour Finals (for which he had already qualified) and the Davis Cup final, both tournaments taking place in November.
> Nadal played 48 singles matches in 2012, his fewest since playing 47 in 2004. He had averaged 83 in the seven seasons inbetween.
> Nadal still managed to claim four tournament victories in 2012, one more than his tally from 2011.
> His won-lost record in 2012 is 42-6, breaking down in 23-1 on clay, 17-3 on hardcourt and 2-2 on grass.
> His last official match this season was the second round defeat at Wimbledon to Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol.
