RECORD: Barça complete sixth domestic double

FOOTBALL –  FC Barcelona defeated Athletic Club in the final of the Copa del Rey on Saturday. After having won La Liga, this domestic double is the sixth in the club’s history.  Before today, Barça had shared the mark of five with Athletic Club, their opponents in the final. FC Barcelona move two doubles clear of Real Madrid, who have done the double on four occasions.

IN THE NEWS: Sevilla 4th Spanish team in 2015/2016 CL

FOOTBALL – With Sevilla FC winning the Europa League final, they have automatically qualified for the 2015/2016 Champions League group stage, making it the fourth Spanish side among the 22 teams already qualified for next season’s CL main tournament.

REVIEW: Vieira Curse lives on for Arsenal

FOOTBALL – By failing to defeat Sunderland on Wednesday, Arsenal now cannot finish in the top two of the Premier League table. Their failure to finish higher than third has now reached its 10th consecutive season. This has become known as ‘The Vieira Curse’. In the eight seasons that Patrick Vieira played at Arsenal (1997-2005) the Gunners finished in the top two in the league. They did not manage that a single time since the Frenchman’s departure.

THE WAVE: Real Madrid – Juventus

FOOTBALL – Real Madrid and Juventus drew 1-1 in Madrid on Wednesday. Juventus equalled FC Barcelona and Bayern München in reaching the Champions League final (since 1992/93) for the fifth time. Only AC Milan have more final berths (6).

Real Madrid had 22 total shots while Juve had only seven. This is clearly shown in the wave below as Real Madrid was pushing harder to score even after being 1-0 up after 23 minutes. Continue reading

THE WAVE: Bayern München – FC Barcelona

FOOTBALL: As you can see in the Wave, Bayern München flew out of the gates and scored directly. After that first goal, Barcelona took over until the closing minutes of the first half. In the second half, Barcelona looked comfortable with Bayern having the initiative  The Spanish side regained the momentum in the very last minutes, but overall Bayern were more dominant.

REVIEW: Burnley suffer 7th top flight relegation

FOOTBALL – Despite beating Hull City 1-0 on Saturday, Burnley were relegated from the Premier League because of results on other grounds. It was Burnley’s second relegation as a promoted side in the Premier League era (1992 onwards). Only Crystal Palace has been relegated more often from the Premier League as a promoted club (3). THE WAVE: FC Barcelona – Bayern München

FOOTBALL – This was a very lively and open match, especially considering the size of the stakes. Bayern attempted to keep pace with the hosts in the possession battle, but soon found Barça’s opportunities piling up. Bayern managed a few chances for themselves, but in the final 15 minutes the floodgates burst and Lionel Messi scored twice and in stoppage time set up Neymar for Barca’s third.

THE WAVE: Juventus – Real Madrid

FOOTBALL – Juventus beat Real Madrid 2-1 at home to secure their 50th home win in the Champions League. Juve (7 on target) and Real (3 on target) both had 12 shots each this match and our wave shows how evenly matched both teams were in this semifinal. The score in the end, however, was in favor of the Italians.
