REVIEW: Federer claims seventh title in Dubai

TENNIS – Roger Federer saw off Novak Djokovic on Saturday, earning his seventh career tournament title in Dubai. Dubai joined Wimbledon and Halle as Federer’s favourite tournaments. He has won each of these on seven occasions. The Federer – Djokovic rivalry now comprises of 37 singles matches. In Open era, only Djokovic and Nadal have squared off more often. Federer claimed his 20th victory over Djokovic. The only player he has beaten more often is Andy Roddick (21 times).

MILESTONE: Roger Federer’s 1,000 career wins

TENNIS – By beating Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in the Brisbane final, Roger Federer joined Jimmy Connors (1,253) and Ivan Lendl (1,071) as the only male players in Open Era with 1,000 ATP career wins. ANALYSE THIS: Is the ‘Big Four’ dominance over?

TENNIS: Marin Cilic won his first Grand Slam title last Monday by beating Kei Nishikori in the 2014 US Open. This was the first Grand Slam in nine years (since 2005 Australian Open) no member of the ‘Big Four’ reached the final. Since that final in Melbourne four players have been dominating men’s tennis: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. In only three of the last 39 Grand Slams the title has NOT been won by a ‘Big Four’ player: Juan Martin Del Potro (2009 US Open), Stanislas Wawrinka (2014 Australian Open) and Marin Cilic (2014 US Open). It is remarkable that two of those wins came in 2014 which raises the question if the dominant spell of the ‘Big Four’ is over. Continue reading

REVIEW: 2013 is Nadal’s third as end of year number one

TENNIS – Rafael Nadal is assured of the world number one ranking at the end of the year, just like he finished in 2008 and 2010. He is the sixth player to earn the distinction in more than two years, apart from Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer. Nadal is the first player to achieve this feat in three non-adjacent years.

PREVIEW: Nadal facing Federer in Rome final

TENNIS – Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both reached the final in the ATP Masters Series in Rome on Saturday. Nadal has reached the final in Rome for a record eighth time.

Nadal can beat Federer for a record 20th time in ATP men’s singles matches. Nadal is also on 19 wins against Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer.

This is Nadal’s 35th Master Series final. Federer will play his 34th. Novak Djokovic is closest by these players on 24 finals.

Nadal has won 23 Masters Series tournaments, Federer is on 21 wins. Andre Agassi is closest by with 17 wins.

TENNIS – Roger Federer defeated David Ferrer for the 14th time on Thursday at the ATP World Tour Finals. In doing so, the Swiss ace piled up more honours and statistics, which we have detailed below.



> Federer is now 14-0 lifetime against David Ferrer, with 11 of the 14 victories coming in straight sets.

> Ferrer joins Mikhail Youzhny as the opponent Federer has the most wins against without a defeat.

> David Ferrer has now lost seven career matches at the ATP World Tour Finals. Four of the seven losses have been to Federer.

> Federer has won all nine sets he has played against Ferrer in four matches at the ATP World Tour Finals, including a straight sets win in a best-of-five match in the 2007 final.

BREAKING: Nadal 2012 season officially done

TENNIS – With Rafael Nadal’s announcement to return to the tennis court in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi in December, his 2012 season has officially come to an end. The Spaniard will forego the ATP World Tour Finals (for which he had already qualified) and the Davis Cup final, both tournaments taking place in November.

> Nadal played 48 singles matches in 2012, his fewest since playing 47 in 2004. He had averaged 83 in the seven seasons inbetween.

> Nadal still managed to claim four tournament victories in 2012, one more than his tally from 2011.

> His won-lost record in 2012 is 42-6, breaking down in 23-1 on clay, 17-3 on hardcourt and 2-2 on grass.

> His last official match this season was the second round defeat at Wimbledon to Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol.
