Beijing will host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games

OLYMPIC GAMES –  At the 128th IOC Session, it was announced today that Beijing will host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

TENNIS – A much anticipated quarterfinal in the men’s singles tournament at Roland Garros sees the top seed, Novak Djokovic, take on the titleholder, Rafael Nadal. Only once in 188 previous Majors, the number 1 seed ran into the defending champion before the semifinals. At Wimbledon in 1993, Pete Sampras, the top seed, overcame titleholder Andre Agassi in the quarterfinals.

FOOTBALL – With Sevilla FC winning the Europa League final, they have automatically qualified for the 2015/2016 Champions League group stage, making it the fourth Spanish side among the 22 teams already qualified for next season’s CL main tournament.

IN THE NEWS: Mondragón can set WC age record

FOOTBALL – Goalkeeper Farid Mondragón is the only player in Colombia’s 2014 World Cup squad. He played in the 1998 World Cup and is one of only two players that could play at both the 1998 and 2014 World Cups. The other is Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o. Mondragón was also part of Colombia’s 1994 World Cup party, but he did not play at all in that tournament.

IN THE NEWS: Argentina send their oldest ever WC squad

FOOTBALL – Argentina’s 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be on average 28 years and 336 days old on the day the tournament kicks off (12 June). It is Argentina’s oldest ever World Cup squad, beating 28-303 from 2002. Should this squad win the World Cup it will be the oldest to ever lift the trophy. The record is now 28-262 by Italy in 2006.

IN THE NEWS – Klose will have a shot at all-time World Cup records

FOOTBALL – Miroslav Klose is one of the veteran players included in Germany’s World Cup party. Klose needs one more goal to equal the al-time record for WC goals by Brazil’s Ronaldo (15). Should Germany reach the semifinals and Klose plays in all of their matches, Klose will raise his total of WC match appearances to 26, which would beat the all-time record of 25 by countryman Lothar Matthäus.

IN THE NEWS: France is cradle of Algeria’s 2014 World Cup squad

FOOTBALL – Algeria’s 2014 World Cup squad consists of 16 players born in France and seven born in Algeria. It also consists of players representing 23 different clubs. This equals an all-time World Cup record, which was established by Serbia in 2010.

IN THE NEWS: Spain return record 16 players from WC winning squad

FOOTBALL – Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque has summoned 16 world champions from 2010 to join him in his team’s title defence in Brazil. This is the greatest number of World Cup winners returning in history. In 2002, France returned with 13 members of their 1998 winning squad. Nineteen of Spain’s 23 players have previously been selected to a Euros or Worlds squad, or both, for a combined 61 previous selections.

IN THE NEWS: Robben, Sneijder, Van Persie spearhead Dutch 23

FOOTBALL – Dutch team boss Louis van Gaal named his 2014 World Cup squad on Saturday and it is spearheaded by veterans Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie. Robben and Sneijder have been selected to go to their sixth major tournament (World Cup and European Championships). Only Edwin van der Sar and Aron Winter have been included in more major tournament squads (7).
