ANALYSE THIS: Arsenal and Chelsea still favoured for last two CL places

FOOTBALL – Two weeks ago, our head of analysis @simongleave looked at the Premier League race for Champions League places and concluded that Arsenal were the favourites despite being in fifth position at that moment. With a fortnight’s worth of fixtures since then, has anything changed.

Looking at our predictive model, the Euro Club Index, it is clear that the only major difference is that Everton are now out of the race. Two weeks ago, they were the outsiders with 5% chance of a top four place but this has now dropped to effectively 0. Arsenal and Chelsea are still the favourites with 73% and 74% chance respectively, with Tottenham Hotspur now on 53%.

The race is still tight though with 70 points – or perhaps 71 to be sure – now being predicted as necessary for one of those prized places in next season’s Champions League. Any slip-ups from one of the three teams in comparison to Euro Club Index expectations is likely to prove costly. On the other hand, victory for Arsenal against Manchester United this weekend would be above ECI expectations and likely to make The Gunners’ top four place more certain.

We can see how the season has gone for the three clubs by looking at how many points they each managed from every group of six matches as shown in the graphic below.

Arsenal are now in the best form of any of the three rivals this season having taken 16 points from their last six matches. Chelsea recorded a similar run of form after six, seven and eight matches but have rarely been close to that since. Tottenham though have dropped off to their worst level of form since November, a little below their six match average of 11.5 points this season.
