ANALYSE THIS: Premier League rich but performs below par

FOOTBALL – The Deloitte Money League has been released and unsurprisingly, the Euro Club Index ranking, which rates clubs based on performance, is highly correlated with this annual ranking of wealth. Four of the top-five clubs on the Deloitte list are also in the Euro Club Index top-10. Manchester United are the big exception at third in the Money League but ranked only 13^th by the Euro Club Index. Another Premier League club, Liverpool, are the ninth richest in the world but are currently only just hanging onto a place in the Euro Club Index top-25. All nine Premier League clubs in Deloitte’s top-20 richest are ranked lower by the Euro Club Index.

THE WAVE: Liverpool v Manchester United

FOOTBALL – Manchester United won 2-1 at Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. Liverpool were down to 10 men after Steven Gerrard was sent off only 42 seconds after coming on at half time. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said: “The best 45 minutes, we played them off the pitch in the first half.” See for yourself in our Wave.

REVIEW: English exodus in Europe greatest in 22 years

FOOTBALL –  Everton’s elimination by Dynamo Kyiv means that thee are no English teams left in Europe this season.  For the first time in 22 years, there will not be a single English club in the quarterfinals of the various European cup competitions. Ever since 1992/93, England have always sent at least one representative to the last eight in Europe. The seven English sides that embarked on their European adventure this season were Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City.

FOOTBALL –  Liverpool lost their unblemished status in penalty shootouts in European cup competitions after being knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday.

THE WAVE: Southampton v Liverpool

FOOTBALL – Liverpool defeated Southampton 2-0 in their away match in the Premier League on Sunday. The wave shows a very effective Liverpool (in blue), scoring twice without pressing. Southampton (in red) showed much at the end, but failed to convert.

ANALYSE THIS: Sixty-two days, seventeen matches

FOOTBALL – 61 days ago – today is day 62 – Tottenham Hotspur lined up in Turkey to play their final Europa League group match against Besiktas which they went on to lose 1-0. Two days earlier, Liverpool drew 1-1 with FC Basel in what was their final Champions League match of the season. This evening, the two clubs play each other and for both, it will be their 17^th match of the last nine weeks, the most played by any European club over that period.

FA Cup shocks top of Premier League

FOOTBALL – On Saturday, 24 January, five teams from the top half of the Premier League table lost their FA Cup tie, of which four played at home of which three were leading.

Euro Club Index: Chelsea would win title in 2 seasons out of every 3 from here

With 17 matches remaining in this season’s Premier League, the race to the title currently involves just two teams, one of which has around twice the chance of the other of ending the season as 2014/2015 Premier League champions. Five more clubs have a realistic chance of a top-4 spot whilst eight teams are currently involved in the relegation battle. This leaves just five – West Ham, Swansea City, Stoke City, Newcastle United and Everton – without much left to play for.

FOOTBALL –  Fernando Torres has rejoined Atlético Madrid seven and a half years after leaving for Liverpool, the beginning of an odyssey which saw him win the 2011/12 Champions League, 2012/13 Europa League and 2011/12 FA Cup with Chelsea as well as two European Championships (2008 and 2012) and the World Cup (2010) with Spain.
