TENNIS – Six of this year’s quarter-finalists in the Australian Open men’s singles are over 28-years-old for the first time in the competition’s history. The average age of the eight quarter-finalists is the oldest since 43-year-old Ken Rosewall reached this stage in 1977.

ANALYSE THIS: Is the ‘Big Four’ dominance over?

TENNIS: Marin Cilic won his first Grand Slam title last Monday by beating Kei Nishikori in the 2014 US Open. This was the first Grand Slam in nine years (since 2005 Australian Open) no member of the ‘Big Four’ reached the final. Since that final in Melbourne four players have been dominating men’s tennis: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. In only three of the last 39 Grand Slams the title has NOT been won by a ‘Big Four’ player: Juan Martin Del Potro (2009 US Open), Stanislas Wawrinka (2014 Australian Open) and Marin Cilic (2014 US Open). It is remarkable that two of those wins came in 2014 which raises the question if the dominant spell of the ‘Big Four’ is over.

PREVIEW: 2014 US Open Men’s Singles Final (8 September)

TENNIS – On Monday 8 September Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic will battle it out for the last Grand Slam title of the year, the US Open. In the semifinals both the number 1 seed, Djokovic, and the number 2 seed, Federer, were stopped in their quest to add another Grand Slam title to their honours. It was for the first time since 2005 that no player of the Big Four was in the final of a men’s Grand Slam.

ANALYSE THIS: Forecast – Djokovic and Serena the Wimbledon favourites

Tennis – The third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon, begins on Monday and the Infostrada Sports’ Forecast model agrees with the seeding commission on the favourites. Number one seed Novak Djokovic has a 37% chance of winning in London this year whilst his female equivalent Serena Williams’ chance is even higher at 40%.

REVIEW: Murray 1st Briton in 77 to win Wimbledon

TENNIS – Andy Murray won the 2013 Wimbledon final by beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Murray became the first British player to win the Wimbledon’s men’s singles final in 77 years, since Fred Perry won in 1936.
